comment Sonatype Nexus incompletely proxies external repository
The build works when I place that URL in my settings.xml as a repository. What's more, after I woke up this morning, Nexus had proxied this repository; however, I can still produce this problem with new proxy repos. Is there just a several-hour lag involved in the proxy operation?

comment JFS: long fsck time on large filesystem?
What filesystem might you recommend? From the looks of the Wiki articles, XFS does the same thing and journals metadata only. I'm hesitant about both Reiser3 and 4, for various reasons, and I dunno about ext3's performance over such a large filesystem. Are either btrfs or ext4 stable enough yet for large-system (read: up to 15TB) production use?

comment JFS: long fsck time on large filesystem?
I've definitely thought about that :) the issue there is that I would have to power down the server again to switch its power source over to the UPS, which would kill the fsck if it's still running.

comment For a server that can tolerate downtime, is it better to use a hot spare or a cold spare?
Are you talking about a spare for the server itself or a spare for an array within the server? The way I read this question, it sounds like you're asking about a complete hot/cold standby backup server, but others have answered it as though you're talking about a RAID array.

CD1: yes, but the x86 quick install guide (gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-quickinstall.xml) doesn't, and that's what I was using at the time. But now I do it reflexively :)

From the description at that page, and what I understand of fixboot, there is a difference.

...and an actual computer to run the rdesktop/VNC software on. The OP wanted to have a peripherals-only setup.

comment What is special about Ubuntu distributions for the PS3?
The Cell architecture isn't really PPC - it's a Power architecture, yes, but PPC is a separate entity. Cell is best described as its own architecture. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(microprocessor)

comment What are the advantages of the Linux server over the Windows server?
+1 especially for the last sentence. Platform choice depends largely (arguably almost entirely) on the purpose of the server, the duties it will be performing, and the clients it will be serving.

comment What programmer things should every sysadmin know?
Yes, but as has been noted on that question, there exist two very separate communities on SF and SO. I think it'd be interesting to see what programmer things sysadmins think sysadmins should know, rather than what programmer things programmers think sysadmins should know.

comment Provide Samba access based on LDAP info?
I'm accepting this answer because it's the closest to what I'd like to do, and after more Googling I'm not sure my original setup is viable anyway - perhaps this will help others.

comment OS / Distribution for a small network firewall / gateway
The Gentoo docs actually do (IMHO) a really great job of explaining getting a router running from virtually nothing, including setting up iptables (and more importantly, why each command does what it does and how it fits into the grand scheme of the firewall).

Of course, if you're used to Linux, 'ifconfig en0' works just as well.

IIRC, the big Seagate drives also have been having some issues with their firmware.

comment Provide Samba access based on LDAP info?
I'd kind of like to be able to get this running without needing to join the machine to the domain - is there no other way?
