Thanks. It's quite important that the switch is relatively small, but I can't find any evidence that the 8-port HP options (408, 1400, 1700) support the spanning tree protocol/802.1D (which is essential).

There's no option to enable (R)STP, on either the web interface or the management software. So I opened a support case, and 3Com eventually confirmed that they had not implemented STP (and mentioned that we might have bought the wrong device...).
