comment Is it wise to use SSHDs (Solid state hybrid drives) on a server?
Yeah. You can set up the RAID / caching yourself and use any file system, I simply recommend ZFS because it handles the RAID and the caching and it can guarantee integrity in the wake of power failure and silent corruption (RAID does not). SATA3 drives are the best way to handle large sequential R/W, and the caching helps to trap the random I/O from interfering with the SATA3 drives too much.

comment Secure file transfer in linux without SSH?
sftp will have whatever file restriction access you set up with permissions on the filesystem. You can set up sftp such that certain accounts require a public key to log in, and can only access the sftp subsystem (not a shell). You might also try ftps, which is ftp's encrypted big brother. ftps+chroot would probably work here.

comment Windows server 2008 & SQL - many connections in TIME_WAIT
@bh213 Apparently orphaned TIME_WAIT sockets are handed off to the system to timeout. I would run a firewall on the system which can track processes trying to access 65.55.11.162 and use that to determine the process when it tries to establish the connection. If the firewall reports the "system" is trying to establish the connection and not a process, I would suspect that something has injected something into the kernel.

comment Windows server 2008 & SQL - many connections in TIME_WAIT
@bh213 It sounds like a piece of software pinging home every couple of seconds. Pointing my browser to that IP gives me a page saying my host isn't authorized to use Telligent Community. Try pointing a webbrowser from the server to that IP and see if it gives you something different.

@BradC What of that is not possible? Are you unable to change the compatibility level of the server?

comment Linux Mdadm + LVM recovery
Whether good or bad practice, I raid the devices, not partitions, and my LVM volumes are on the devices, not partitions (i.e., pvcreate /dev/md0) In my attempts to make the system boot without user help, I installed grub to one of the phsyical devices, but this causes the partition table to show up in the raid device (i.e., /dev/md0p1, though it was corrupt - The actual raid data was fine). Because the raid device had a partition table now, LVM refused to search /dev/md0 and would only search /dev/md0p1. I told fdisk to create a new partition table and wrote it to disk to blank it.

comment Domain Forwarding | A Magento Store
@WaZ Many php packages need to know both the path to the installation directory and the url to reach the root of the package. Double check that these are accurate after moving the files. Otherwise I can't help any more without more detailed information on the error.
