Is it considered a best practice to delete the DefaultWebSite and App Pools from IIS? Could you provide some idea of why you do this and how it helps? Your answer presently has very little context. |

Deploy hosts file among machines connected to a domain @Regmi I'm not intimately familiar with how that would work, since I haven't worked with Active Directory in a while. My understanding is that you can use Group Policy to specify a startup script which can run as an administrator. Beyond that I can't offer many details. |

Deploy hosts file among machines connected to a domain The problem with that is regular users do not have write access to the directory the hosts file is saved in, so this would not work. You could perhaps include it in a startup script though. |

ZFS: Removing files from snapshots? The post you referenced is not an official policy. There is an FAQ on MSO explaining how to handle questions the user thinks are on topic for multiple sites. To summarize, cross posting is disallowed. If you decide after you post that it would be better elsewhere and you haven't gotten good answers, you can flag it to be migrated or you can delete it and re-ask, but you must tailor the post to the site you're asking on. You reposted the exact same question word-for-word without waiting, which fails the guidelines in both meta posts about cross posting. |

Alternative to Windows Server? @paradroid Samba v.3 (which is the current stable release) can act as an NT4-style domain controller. Samba v.4 (currently in development) will be able to act as an active directory domain controller. Many organizations use Samba as a complete alternative to Windows Server - it does file sharing, printing, and domain control. |

Alternative to Windows Server? Fair enough @surfasb. But in this case I think scaring the guy is exactly what we need to do, because frankly, it'll cost his company more long term to pay him to figure out some crazy home-brewed solution than it would for them to just buy Windows 7 licenses. Which I think was pretty much the point of your answer :) See also, my answer below. |

Alternative to Windows Server? You really can't merge the registry keys, because the keys are in HKCU, so they're specific to each user profile. You'd have to record the keys, then write a script which finds every single user registry hive, loads it, imports the keys, unloads it, finds the next one... |

How can I logon to a user account on a domain without destroying user password? No. NEVER ask a user for their password. This is a crucial policy in IT administration. Users must be taught that nobody, IT staff included, will ever ask for their password. This helps prevent social engineering attacks. |

How remove/de-index a page from Google? If you have submitted the request, then the entries should be removed eventually. By signing up for a webmaster tools account, Google should now know about your site and index it, but will only index what it finds relevant. Robots.txt only affects what the bot specifically ignores. If you want to tell google about certain pages on your site, you can use a sitemap.xml file. |

How remove/de-index a page from Google? If it already has Disallow *, then search bots shouldn't be indexing anything on your site, which probably isn't what you want. If you only want to block bots from accessing those specific subfolders, remove the Disallow: * line, but keep the specific lines, so that bots can index the rest of your site, but not those parts. |
