I'm tending to go with large downtime option. I'm guessing that I would back up DB's first, uninstall Standard Edition and any features not support by Web Edition, THEN install Web Edition and attach DB's? The process looks involved and error-prone: support.microsoft.com/kb/955499

Not sure what you mean by #3... I thought I could get the registered IPs for each site and assign them as in steps #1 and #2. Are you saying I have to log into the clients' registrar accounts and update something there?

Actually, I'm in the process of upgrading my instance of BlogEngine - the newer version includes Akismet and RECAPTACHA. In the meantime, I was thinking of blocking some of the offending IP ranges and wasn't sure of the steps to do this...
