comment Add Storage Step in Launching Amazon EC2 Instance
Note that it is possible to use Instance Store with an EBS-backed AMI -- the root volume (i.e., where your OS is installed and running from) would be an EBS, and your instance store volume(s) would be additional block devices (/dev/sd* in linux, or F:, G: etc in Windows).

comment Email server on AWS EC2
This is old but this might give insights to some people: you can easily make a setup in which you receive email in gmail and can send both from gmail (for "simple" emails) and any other bulk mail (such as Amazon SES). To receive at gmail, you need to setup MX records on your domain pointing to google's mail servers. To send bulk email "from" your domain through Amazon SES, well, you just send it (after verifying the source address or the source domain through SES console).

comment Cannot connect to MySQL on RDS (Amazon Web Services) from my laptop
golimar, this is an RDS instance: it is a database server completely managed by Amazon. All we can do is use a web interface (or a CLI) to change MySQL parameters, change Security Group (ie, the firewall) parameters and reboot the machine. There's no way to "ssh into the server" (the whole idea is that they should take care of everything and make it run smoothly), and, to be frank, I have no idea what the host system is, or what kind of packages it has installed. Anyways, thanks for the input!
