comment How can I identify the process(es) which are locking files on servers?
As an update: Having removed all AV from the server, the problem still exists.

Well, assuming it is some AV software running on the server, how could I demonstrate that it is the cause of the locks, as per the original question?

Policy's been checked and will be re-checked after the weekend, but right now it's set to not scan any of the files used by the build server's build process.

No pattern than I can observe; the locks appear totally at random. Sometimes it's the publishing step (pushing built assemblies into an output folder), sometimes it's in prepare step (deleting logs and artifacts from the last build). We're using MSBuild and a little NAnt to perform file manipulation.

AV has been disabled. As for the error, we simply get a message that the file is locked.

comment MSMQ Disaster Recovery
If we're using storage replication and clustered MSMQ, what would the steps be to fail over in the event of a disaster?

Actually, this is where my question comes in: "If the defaultProxy element is empty, the proxy settings from Internet Explorer will be used."

A .NET application will normally read the internet settings from the account's local profile. What happens when, as in this case, the account lacks a local profile, because it is just being used as a security principal?

comment Can I add a virtual IP address to a network adapter remotely?
Could I press you for an example? The netsh documentation and built-in help is a little unclear for me.

They do all sorts of things in the name of "security". I'm sure they'll turn off the boxes one day and go "Yes! Nobody can access now!" All I can do is try and find solutions around their problems.

comment Website returns 500 error when partially-qualified name is used
No, no filters on this site. Perhaps you're feeling as lost I have have for the last few hours! I can confirm the error is 500 too, from this line in the HTML source: <!-- default "Unknown Host" response (500) --> I'm baffled.

Adding the entry to the hosts file returns the same error as presented in question.

I can confirm that company.local is in the DSN Suffix list for the server's network adapter. Will attempt your suggestion and get back.

At the moment, no code. Just plain helloworld.html. Adding "unfriendly" error to question.

I'm querying the site from the server itself, so there shouldn't be a firewall problem. The error page is similar to this: codinghorror.typepad.com/.a/… But for a 500 error. Not getting any 500.x with detail, I'm afraid.

I have tried with headers for service.test and service.test.company.local. Trying to access service.test always generates a 500 error, regardless. Also, I'm using helloworld.html as my test page.

comment Identifying Hard Drive as performance bottleneck for desktop machines
To say the machines aren't exactly ideal is understating the huge amount of time I'm wasting just waiting for basic operations to complete. Let me fix the HDD issues first and then I'll complain about not enough RAM!
