I connect computers, humans, and narrative.

I'm always looking for interesting projects, especially if they involve Lisp/Clojure, Python, or JavaScript. I am in the process of relocating to Seattle to join the team at Amazon. I write about technical thoughts at http://stronglyemergent.com along with a co-author, and I have a GitHub page that I'm gradually populating with projects as well as a CV/résumé at Stack Overflow Careers.

comment Regular expressions in GREP
Especially since an XML parser knows what XML is supposed to look like and can show exactly where the error is without the trial-and-error of refining a regex for the specific case.

comment How does one make Windows XP auto-reconnect network drives upon reboot?
I can't believe this stayed a problem in Vista and Win7. That's a decade-old OS wart, what the heck.

Ah, I didn't see it in that light. Thank you. Yeah, might need to be closed, then. I freely admit that I was a bit desperate when I asked.

It overlaps a little, but I think that this question is a lot more specific and answerable than that one.

That's a decent recommendation. What part of MS should I call? It's not like they have just one phone number, and searches for "licensing problem" and the like tend to turn up lots of not-so-useful results.

We were having a very similar issue, and that command helped in our situation. Thanks.

comment Windows Server 2008 Hangs On Boot After crcdisk.sys
Chkdsk got stuck on file N out of a few hundred thousand for 16+ hours, so I'm calling that a failed drive, I think. :(

No it is not - so if chkdsk is capable of that, as you imply, I'd better try it.

While that's interesting, that's not really an answer.

This is a machine that had been running fine for a year or so, so I doubt that it's a driver issue, and I don't think that the BIOS settings have been changed - I looked through them while troubleshooting. Couldn't hurt to look again, though.

I ran a quick scan with SpinRite, if you're familiar with that, that came back without reporting any errors. I am not sure how much of the same territory chkdsk.exe covers - should I still bother ?

Two years later, I note that there's no resolution, and I'm having the same problem.

I measured those times by using time curl $foo for a variety of pages.

Yeah, I think you're barking up entirely the wrong tree (but so was I initially).

Yes, the home directory is seanm:seanm rwx------.

Adding and removing that flag did not have any effect on the problem.

comment Recovering From userdel root
Manually adding "root" back into /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow is what we ended up doing. Accepting on that basis.

Sudoing actually didn't work while the root account was not present. Going to runlevel 1 and manually adding the user to /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, then changing the password, seemed to work. With the help of vm snapshots, we recreated the situation. :D

comment Configuring Windows 2003 As A Router
Took a while to kick in, but that seems to have worked. Gosh, editing the Registry directly is so much more convenient than a GUI tool or a shell command.

I've been sticking with the GUI tools for now, so I haven't made that registry edit. Trying that now.
