In this particular case it was a file system permission. The folde was owned by root/root and the permissions where 700. Samba user did not have access to that folder. However I am interested in the generic answer.

chdir(2) is using path_resolution(7) to verify the permissions. I think is the same as path_walk() in the ftrace output. See: linux.die.net/man/7/path_resolution
