I work at a large international development charity in London, as International Operations Manager. I manage a team of Regional ICT Service Managers, based in developing world countries, who keep our users happy through fixing problems, setting up great connectivity and generally making sure users can do their day jobs.

I previously worked at the same place as International Network Systems Analyst. I looked after a bunch of ICT systems in offices in the developing world, as well as looking after systems in our HQ. I gained a lot of knowledge in that job, and the techy side competes with the people stuff in the new role, hence I still hang out here a lot.

I'm passionate about the use of ICT in developing countries, both in terms of dealing with the inherent problems for ICT in those places, and using ICT as a tool for development.

I also noticed that under a very small load, the problems with NLB do not occur (e.g. I set my hosts file to point our intranet urls at the NLB address, and I don't see the problem - but when everyone goes to the sharepoint servers via the NLB address, things are very slow)

comment Working around Gmail mailing-list “feature.”
I wasted a lot of time troubleshooting my mailing list because I wasn't seeing any messages at the Gmail account I was testing from before I figured this out. Extremely annoying "feature" My messages weren't going into spam, but I know they were being delivered and accepted by Google mail servers. Look forward to an answer.

comment Virtualised Sharepoint Backup Strategies
Well - I think virtualisation presents some great opportunities to speed up backup and simplify restoration. Maybe someone here has given it thought. If not, fine. I'll figure something out.

@MattB: Given I have a virtualised environment, I have a few extra options specific to that, and I haven't found a great deal written on it already.

Just to clarify a bit - I am aware that I could just backup the entire VMs, but this gives a lot of data that we don't really need in a disaster (index files etc) that will slow down recovery time. I have an idea where I make a WFE that has the Central Admin site installed on it, and doesn't do any kind of query or indexing work - so the VM disk can be quite small. A restore of this VM could then act as the first server in a new farm. Will that work?
