I work at a large international development charity in London, as International Operations Manager. I manage a team of Regional ICT Service Managers, based in developing world countries, who keep our users happy through fixing problems, setting up great connectivity and generally making sure users can do their day jobs.

I previously worked at the same place as International Network Systems Analyst. I looked after a bunch of ICT systems in offices in the developing world, as well as looking after systems in our HQ. I gained a lot of knowledge in that job, and the techy side competes with the people stuff in the new role, hence I still hang out here a lot.

I'm passionate about the use of ICT in developing countries, both in terms of dealing with the inherent problems for ICT in those places, and using ICT as a tool for development.

comment SharePoint (WSS 3.0) not updating permissions based on Active Directory Security Groups
Joel Olson has a long blog entry on use of different group types at blogs.msdn.com/b/joelo/archive/2007/06/29/…. Probably worth a look there.

comment Is There An Active Directory Alternative
A non-profit should be able to obtain special pricing from Microsoft, for example through TechSoup. If your organisation isn't tech focussed, you will likely spend more money overall getting an OpenSource solution implemented than just getting Windows Server 2008 R2 at non-profit rates.

-1 - copy pasting isn't great, but it is preferable to linking to something that could move or be deleted at any time. Update your answer to get voted up.

Interesting. Do you know what the ambient temperatures where when the overheating occurred? Ouagadougou is probably our hottest location - max temperature in shade recorded is 48°C!

Yeah - we would certainly pilot this, but if someone answers the question saying "we tried this already in Nairobi and it melted through the floor" then I won't bother :-)

Probably you'll get a better response posting this on StackOverflow (or find someone already answered the same question there)

Effectively the same. You should mark your answer as accepted (and probably update it to say what you did so in future people can benefit from what you learned) :-)

comment Is Selling Old Cisco Routers a Security Issue?
Yeah - frustrating to then have to get a USB dongle, and they usually come with no documentation so you spend a while figuring out how to access. I'm sure a few people have got the blue cable with an RJ45 at one end and spent hours trying to figure out how to configure. Dell switches come with a cable with Serial connector at one end and a USB port at the other. No documentation, and I never figured out how they worked. It's a closed cult :-)

comment Windows Home Basic and Domain or LDAP
I wouldn't assume this is off topic just because Windows Home Edition is mentioned. In my professional experience in multiple organisations, you are sometimes challenged to join a computer someone has purchased with a home edition of Windows on it. The answer you give as a professional is that you can't and the person should not have bought the cheap computer without going through the regular procurement procedures. Just because not every single user approaches things in a professional manner doesn't mean the OP isn't a pro!
