I work at a large international development charity in London, as International Operations Manager. I manage a team of Regional ICT Service Managers, based in developing world countries, who keep our users happy through fixing problems, setting up great connectivity and generally making sure users can do their day jobs.

I previously worked at the same place as International Network Systems Analyst. I looked after a bunch of ICT systems in offices in the developing world, as well as looking after systems in our HQ. I gained a lot of knowledge in that job, and the techy side competes with the people stuff in the new role, hence I still hang out here a lot.

I'm passionate about the use of ICT in developing countries, both in terms of dealing with the inherent problems for ICT in those places, and using ICT as a tool for development.

comment Laptop as server
I don't see why this needs to be closed. Sure - maybe using a laptop as a server is a bad idea - but that doesn't mean it isn't a valid question, and it certainly relates to servers, so how is it off topic?

-1 for "not auto". You need the same config at both ends (switch and NIC) including auto-negotiate.

comment dns/mx records for sub domain
no - I think it would try and resolve the whole domain name, and go for the A record. Easy enough to test.

comment What tools are available to sleep desktops at night to save power?
Many updates will require a reboot, so you can only get what you want with discarding the updates or relying on users to reboot in order to activate the updates. You can set a sleep or hibernate policy through GPO, but I don't know the effects of WOL on these. You should test. Or go to senior management with the potential power savings and value of proper updating, and get them to endorse a shut down.

comment Configuring high-availability with snapshots
You might use such a feature to restore a VM to a snapshot in case the VM stops responding. I can imagine times you might want that.

comment Authenticate Subversion users with svnserve AND SSH
You could use key based authentication with WebDAV. You will still need some kind of authentication server, and configure your web server to use certificate based authentication.

comment dns/mx records for sub domain
+1 Good point. You would need an MX record only if you wanted to add redundancy, mail filtering or some other function.
