I work at a large international development charity in London, as International Operations Manager. I manage a team of Regional ICT Service Managers, based in developing world countries, who keep our users happy through fixing problems, setting up great connectivity and generally making sure users can do their day jobs.

I previously worked at the same place as International Network Systems Analyst. I looked after a bunch of ICT systems in offices in the developing world, as well as looking after systems in our HQ. I gained a lot of knowledge in that job, and the techy side competes with the people stuff in the new role, hence I still hang out here a lot.

I'm passionate about the use of ICT in developing countries, both in terms of dealing with the inherent problems for ICT in those places, and using ICT as a tool for development.

comment Outbound ports to allow through firewall - core requirements
Well - of course you need to compromise to have a system acceptable by your business. Perfect security would not allow any internet connection at all...

comment Step by step guide for asa 5505
ASA doesn't run IOS. It is a similar OS, with many shared commands, but it isn't the same OS. Admitted good knowledge of IOS and Cisco networking will be useful, but there is more with the ASAs.

Bittorrent, botnets, viruses. There are many reasons why one would want to lock down a remote offices abilities. Of course there are other ways to deal with these, but limiting the ports that can be used seems like a good start. Of course, I am open to alternative suggestions for how to enforce internet usage, as long as they use the equipment we already invested in.

+1 for "stepping all over crime scene". Unless you know exactly what you are doing, or don't really care to collect exact forensic evidence, then you may want to call in the experts rather than pollute the evidence as you learn how to do forensics...

I have this same issue. Did you ever resolve this?

comment How can I get logwatch to process alternate apache logs?
Note that your logwatch reports won't specify which logfile a particular item came from (e.g. Local File Inclusion probes) with combined logfile format.
