I work at a large international development charity in London, as International Operations Manager. I manage a team of Regional ICT Service Managers, based in developing world countries, who keep our users happy through fixing problems, setting up great connectivity and generally making sure users can do their day jobs.

I previously worked at the same place as International Network Systems Analyst. I looked after a bunch of ICT systems in offices in the developing world, as well as looking after systems in our HQ. I gained a lot of knowledge in that job, and the techy side competes with the people stuff in the new role, hence I still hang out here a lot.

I'm passionate about the use of ICT in developing countries, both in terms of dealing with the inherent problems for ICT in those places, and using ICT as a tool for development.

comment Postfix character encoding?
If it is only your VPS provider who is seeing the incorrect name, but the rest of the world gets it, seems like the problem may lie with them. But if they are just seeing a malformed name, is the problem a big one?

comment VMware vSwitches and Dell PowerConnect BPDU guard
Sorry - I got a bit confused with Dell's different terminology/functions. I can't actually enable/disable bpduguard at all. Dell offer bpdu-protection, which might be the same thing and can only be enabled globally (default is off - so what happens if I switch it on now?) and bpdufilter which looks like something else altogether.

This is a good question - I am sure there are many people who need to accept files from anyone into a given folder, but don't want to give everyone access to that folder.

Do you have spanning tree disabled for the ports, or are you using portfast and bpduguard disable on these ports instead? I have Dell PowerConnect switches, which don't suppport disabling bpdu-guard at the port level (can only do globally).

comment .htaccess configuration issue
If you are including files which have php code in that must be executed, you need to use PHP include functions. You don't need to use Apache .htaccess or httpd.conf to achieve this. See the link I added to my answer for more info.

comment PowerShell Regex for validating DOMAIN\username
It wouldn't be quick for me :-), plus I want to make this script available more widely - wouldn't that require hard coding some stuff into the script or require additional parameters? If you know this is super simple and can tell me off the top of your head how to do it, that would be most appreciated.

comment PowerShell Regex for validating DOMAIN\username
The PowerShell script I have written requires a username, which is then used to delete alerts in Sharepoint for that user. Sharepoint uses the DOMAIN\username notation. The check is just for a string of the correct format - since it takes a little while to process the script on a large Sharepoint install I want to check the syntax at least is correct otherwise it takes 10 - 30 seconds to find out you made a typo.
