I work at a large international development charity in London, as International Operations Manager. I manage a team of Regional ICT Service Managers, based in developing world countries, who keep our users happy through fixing problems, setting up great connectivity and generally making sure users can do their day jobs.

I previously worked at the same place as International Network Systems Analyst. I looked after a bunch of ICT systems in offices in the developing world, as well as looking after systems in our HQ. I gained a lot of knowledge in that job, and the techy side competes with the people stuff in the new role, hence I still hang out here a lot.

I'm passionate about the use of ICT in developing countries, both in terms of dealing with the inherent problems for ICT in those places, and using ICT as a tool for development.

If the CPU usage is worryingly high when running VMs on the server, then an upgrade probably won't help - you are simply pushing the host too far. If it is running high with no VMs running on it, then you have serious problems!

comment Why can't I RDP to a new Domain Controller with an account in Domain Admins group?
I removed the Active Directory Domain Services from the server. Then I disabled our anti-virus on-access scanning and ran dcpromo again. This time it seems to have worked. I guess that may have blocked some installation. Reenabling on-access afterwards configured to exclude for Domain Controller as directed by Microsoft .

No - fresh install of Windows Server 2008 R2 from boot media on a brand new VM, then added the Active Directory Domain Services role.

Thanks - if I am wiping this VM, do I need to follow any steps to undo the dcpromo that I already ran? I am assuming that if I just wipe it I will hit problems with my other domain controllers still trying to replicate with it - the setup does seem to have worked partially.

It's a VM so I can login locally through vSphere client console. But that isn't normally how we do things, and if RDP isn't working as expected then what else is wrong? There is a group called Remote Destkop Users on our domain - Domain Admins is a member of this amongst others.

Why not put your config right here in the question? You do want an answer don't you?

Just because a tool is old doesn't mean it doesn't do the job well. The wheel was invented a long time ago - we don't need to reinvent it just because it is old.

comment Difference between GBIC and SFP
I think all the close votes and down votes are there because you used a bunch of abbreiviations in your question, and gave no background. This makes your question less likely to show up in searches making it less likely that the answer you got is findable and useful for someone else. Please write your questions a bit more fully in future, for the greater good.

Both of them are all the same :-) This is the start of a joke right?

www.mahsc-ctu.co.uk is a subdomain on mahsc-ctu.co.uk - so they are the same domain.

comment Recreate Azure virtual machine from existing and working disk
"Windows Azure has technical problems handling virtual hard disks" - since Azure is a virtualization platform doesn't this mean it is broken?

Can you take a look at your formatting again - use four spaces at the start of the line to mark a block as code (rather than using backtick). Right now it isn't clear whether you are using backticks in your code, or trying to display code using backticks.

The question really is are you going to trust Wikipedia over the official site? And do you really care about stable?

The question isn't an exact duplicate, but the answer is the correct answer for this question too - you need to set up multiple contacts for the same person, then assign these contacts according to how you require notification.

comment Choosing between meaningful and meaningless hostnames
In my experience P2V or V2P breaks a whole bunch of things and should be avoided where possible - we do, hence it isn't an issue with our naming convention. The naming convention needs to meet the requirements of whoever designed it - in the org I work in it was designed by the team who manage all the servers and network equipment, and they want to be able to tell the above things. It might not be right for you, but then it is all open to debate. The only technical requirement is uniqueness.

comment Is there an alternative to Samba when it comes to sharing folders between Linux and Windows systems?
Sorry - this seems like something few people will ever want to do. If you need consistent throughput for downloading files to both workstations then you probably need to set up a server in the middle, or stick with storing your files on Workstation A. It seems like you might spend more time trying to make this work perfectly than you will ever save in download speed.
