comment linux + match only VALID IP from text file into other file
@yael The syntax should be the same for Perl. Just surround it with a match grouping and reference the grouping ($1).

comment What's wrong with this iptable rule?
@warl0ck I meant the full 'iptables...', not every rule.

comment Unix Server Partitioning & Filesystem Layout
Keeps /var/log from taking everything by filling up. Limits corruption to a filesystem. Simplifies backups -- whether snapshots or mount traversal rules, one often wants to back things up on different schedules. Simplifies imaging / upgrades. Allows selection of filesystems based performance related to the task.

comment How do I configure tinydns (with fefe's IPv6 patch) to listen on IPv6 address?
Alternate answer: dnsmasq supports IPv6 natively and will also offer router advertisements.

comment Why is Linux reporting “free” memory strangely?
@stan31337 Yes, it is possible, no you should not do that. Having this file in memory costs you nothing. If you clear all your caches, every file that is cached and has to be read again from disk will just slow your system down. Let it do what it was designed to do.

Asker didn't find it helpful for this particular instance, but +1 for good general knowledge.

comment linux + match only VALID IP from text file into other file
@glennjackman Good point. It didn't click to me that none of the "extra digits" numbers were included in the example output, probably from a combination of it being very late at night my time and the syntax highlighting. Definitely should use negations in this circumstance, yet be aware that one extra digit of nonsense could still make a valid IP depending on the digit.

@yael use egrep -o

That doesn't contradict the asker's statement, though... nor really confirm it. Just covers all the background related.

comment Sudoers file permissions
-1. Sudo specifies the command to run. This is the system object file that is being written to.

Are you authenticating against LDAP / KRB5 or against your /etc/shadow?

comment Why doesn't apache restart after configuring SSL?
For -p to be effective, netstat needs to run as root or the service in question. Did you run netstat with root privileges?

comment Why doesn't apache restart after configuring SSL?
You're not the first to go in that direction. The right answer is lsof or netstat. See serverfault.com/questions/357323/… for more details and the right flags.

comment Programmatically configure Hadoop cluster from python
I'm not aware of any Hadoop API in OpenStack, but for a shameless plug I can say that Nimbula Director does have Hadoop support tied in.

comment Recommended optimum level of free memory in a server
Memory is relatively cheap... chuck 16GB at it. Find out what is using so much memory. In the best of circumstances, you'll diagnose what's consuming memory first.

Why don't you post the configuration file? Then we don't have to guess what you wrote.

Sounds to me like you bound ssh to listen to the local interface instead of all interfaces... or your company's network systems killed you dead.

This sounds like a job for Powershell and delegation of an interface to responsible parties.
