Thanks for the answer, can you point to where MS have indicated they'll have something to deal with the multiple-databases scenario? That's a killer for us too so I'm keen to watch this space.

comment Newly Created IIS AppPool not found
If you're on Win Server 2008 (not R2) you can't add through the GUI but you can via the commandline. If you're on 2008 R2 make sure you select the machine name for Locations and have Built-in security principals selected for Object Types.

comment Is there any way to cache HTTPS requests in a proxy server?
You could ask Trustwave zdnet.com/… to sell you a root certificate so you can implement this solution without inconveniencing your users :P

comment Installing SSL Certificate for use in IIS7, installation “works”, but cert listing disappears
No, you don't need to rekey to install on different machines. Import into the machine you generated the CSR from (making sure you import the intermediate certificate before importing the .crt), then export to a .pfx and you can import into the others.

Any pattern to the timing of the CPU usage? Could it be app pool recycling plus WarmUp?

comment Web app running as NETWORK SERVICE can connect to SQL Server but windows service running as LOCAL SYSTEM cannot
Thanks, that looks helpful. Do you know what happens to processes running as NETWORK SERVICE when the connection reverts to NTLM without that policy configured? i.e. is it normal for the process to use machine account when running as NETWORK SERVICE but Anonymous when running as LOCAL SYSTEM if the connection is over NTLM, if that policy isn't configured?

This document microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4754 is very helpful for troubleshooting such issues, as is this article blogs.msdn.com/b/dataaccesstechnologies/archive/2010/01/29/…

comment How to create a forwarding account in office 365?
Great, I've used your solution. I do find the $x.EmailAddresses.Add(y) syntax quite deceptive since it's only modifying a temporary collection, so I quite like the alternate Get-MailContact -Identity $recipientName | Set-MailContact -EmailAddresses @{Add="an.address@example.com", "another.address@example.com"}

comment How to update Outlook to point to Office 365 server instead of previous hosted exchange server?
Can you elaborate? I've updated the autodiscover CNAME, but this doesn't appear to update the server name or connectivity information for my Outlook profile. Do users need to create new profiles, etc.

And for anyone who hasn't previously set up powershell to connect to exchange, here's the instructions: help.outlook.com/en-us/140/cc952755.aspx

Thanks! Looks like a Mail Contact is better suited than a Shared mailbox, which was my first solution.

Where "DOMAIN\SERVER$" is replaced with actual domain name and server name but keeping the trailing $, e.g. "MYDOM\SRV123$"

comment ASP.net user account permissions in IIS 7 on Windows 2008 server
In IIS7 the properties of each app pool say whether it's using 'app pool identity' or a real user like Network Service. If it's using app pool identity then it runs using a special identity "IIS AppPool[app pool name]", e.g. "IIS AppPool\MyAppPool". You can grant file & other permissions to that user using normal file properties window. When an app pool is running with application pool identity when it connects to resources on a different machine it presents itself using the identity "DOMAIN\SERVER$" so grant access to that identity (e.g. network file permissions or SQL Server windows auth).

comment Running SVNSync on a windows box
To create an empty pre-revprop-change hook: go to the repository directory, then into the hooks directory, and create a new empty file pre-revprop-change.bat. (SVN runs this to check if you're allowed to change revision properties. Having an empty file means the process exits successfully, so changing revision properties is always allowed.)
