I've been a Sys admin for about 5 years working on pretty much everything. I also do some coding as needed and as a hobby.

comment Why do we ping the IP 4.2.2.2 to test connectivity?
The problem with opendns is it will resolve unknown addresses to its own servers and send you to their BS search site. Very annoying if you're troubleshooting a DNS resolution issue.

@john883: DONT EVER DISABLE STP. It is too easy to create a loop and then your network is down. STP in its basic default config should cause no problems. Enable port-fast on individual ports like they said.

comment Why are network printers not available in the Add Printer Wizard…when run over a network?
@Kev: You can script it with a login script if you are using active directory. So all users will have that printer added when they login.

comment How to block outside network access on a windows 2008 server
Both those options are pretty messy and will make it hard to do things like access the internet or install updates.

Sorry, I checked a few distros I'm using before commenting to make sure I wasn't mistaken. Never actually used Slackware.

@warner: all things being equal, running ssh on a different port does not create a security risk. Assuming you still take the other appropriate security measures you would take anyways I don't see how it is a problem.
