I've been in the IT industry since 2000. I have a degree in physics but chose to make my career in IT. Currently I spend more time working with system security than writing code but when I have the time I enjoy perl, php and mysql.

Currently working on:

LAMP servers
Postfix
Windows Server 2008
Network Administration
Security Administration
Asterisk

comment Most effective way to change Linux command prompt for all users?
+1 I agree with your suggestion for using puppet although the upfront "cost" would be greater than just editing the ten machines by hand if all incredimike wants to do is shorten the hostname. But going forward, the continual update and management time of 10+ servers is greatly reduced with Puppet. I'm using it to manage 200+ servers and am pretty happy with it.

comment /etc/crontab or any user crontab is not being executed
@ I've separated the environments for system cron and user cron (thanks for pointing that out). No offense, but can you restart and/or check the status of /etc/init.d/crond? More importantly, does Does the /usr/bin/run-parts file exist?

comment what chmod and owner:group settings are best for a web application?
Sorry for the super late reply. Apache is a user but doesn't have a password by default. Now you could go out of your way to make it so apache could log in via ftp or ssh but I imagine you haven't done that so you're probably safe. You've most definitely figured this out for now, just wanted to wrap up your open question.

Yes, downclocking the entire system would be the outcome.

okay, I helped you out a bit (ie you asked a good question so I gave you an up vote). But really, save your comments for when you can comment. The answers are, well, for answers.

@Holloway - Perfect suggestion! If anyone else is interested, there is a very straightforward guide at: howtoforge.com/…. The wget links are out of date but you'll be able to find the up-to-date files based on those links.

@onassar - no reason to be so hard on yourself. Surely you don't feel like one of those. ;)

This isn't an answer to DR's question, it's a comment to James Lawrie's answer. Please use comments in cases like these.

comment Ubuntu Server randomly disconnects from Internet?
looks like your Linux kernel is either not compatible with your hardware (hard to believe since it originally worked) or you actually have hardware failure. Can you swap out your NIC (since that seemed to be the original culprit. At this point I am only giving you troubleshooting steps (not specific answers). You might want to create another question and bring some kernel experts into the mix if you think all of your hardware is good.

I'm guessing that you're correct. I don't think it's your ISP either. Did you recently build this server or has it been online for a while? ( I know my suggestion above sounds crazy - helped out someone else who gave almost exact same description as you.)
