Another PHP programmer responsible for things like the MicroMVC PHP framework.

You may notice that some of my questions run very deep into the heart of certain issues because I strive for the highest optimization that is possible in my apps.

"When you're regularly the target of DDOS attacks, you need to reconsider your public relations" That's the long and short of it.

@ShaneMadden perhaps you could help me with this.

comment How do you set server specific ENV values in Nginx?
@ShaneMadden, the nginx config isn't part of the project but must be created on each server manually. So it won't be overwritten. What I posted isn' the full configs - we are also just using standard fastcgi_pass to forward the request to ruby/php.

@quanta I tried what you just posted but it doesn't work. I updated my question with the new block.

comment Downtimeless MySQL backups on a budget
You can buy servers for a lot cheaper than $150 a month. 7GB does not sound like that much data. You can buy disposable 128MB servers for as little as $1.50 a month and more impressive 1GB ones for about $20. Since there is no need for a query cache you can easily handle plenty of writes with a GB of RAM and a server with an SSD.

comment In memory key/value store using integer keys (not string hashes)
I guess that is true, I looked but I couldn't find one. However, storing a 32-bit key (~4 billion) is actually 4x smaller than a 128 bit MD5 (or 160 bit sha1) key hash. The values are either very small strings or integers themselves so they size of the key really does make a difference. Still, I guess I don't have much choice but to throw more RAM at it.

comment Database which only holds indexes and last X records in memory?
Redis comes the closest. If only they didn't keep the data in memory.

comment Database which only holds indexes and last X records in memory?
Scalaris looks nice, but it doesn't store data on disk so you would need a node network setup if you didn't want to lose your data.

The problem is that Redis requires the data to be stored in RAM also (or swap space). You cannot have a Redis database with more memory than RAM + Swap. It's the same problem that memcached has. I can't fit 2GB of data in a membase or redis database on a 256MB VPS.

comment How do you install “extra” versions of backport packages in debian?
Hmmm, that would explain it. I just assumed they existed because the install page lists squeeze as the current repo and sid is where the packages are.

comment Is Postfix the same thing as Sendmail?
I would love to setup Exim if it is noticeably smaller - but there just isn't that much out there on it unless you already know what your doing.

comment Is Postfix the same thing as Sendmail?
Ok, so I can use most things that talk about requiring "sendmail" even though I have postfix setup because postfix has a mock-sendmail frontend script that handles everything. So my apps will never know it's not sendmail they are talking with.
