comment Storage issues: Prolonging the life of a legacy Compaq ML370
15 years is... a pretty good run. Its probably old enough if things started failing, things like ram and such would be hard to replace. I'd also suspect considering how much more efficient modern systems are that a modern replacement would pay for itself in a few years. Also. 8gig disks. My phone has more storage...

Where did you read it? The reasoning should be there. More context would be super useful.

comment Prevent HDDs from spinning up before shutdown in Ubuntu/ZoL/SAS2008 environment
It'll probably get kicked back - the fact that you're using consumer hardware probably won't go well with them. Let me check with a mod there.

off hand, I seem to think per file/directory permissions (without a forced permissions setting) on samba should do it.

comment Server destroying and burning my Hard Drives
You've burnt out 12 disks. Your way isn't working. Maybe, just maybe just listening to a guy who actually babysits much bigger, critical disk arrays might be a good idea, especially when its an easier, cheaper solution?

comment Server destroying and burning my Hard Drives
I'd also add that a disk array that is burning out disks is a VERY large paperweight, and the arguments about costing time is plainly illogical. Its costing you time now - every moment till you pick up that phone, or firing up the email client, and letting your enclosure vendor know he sold you a bum unit.

Professional? Professional is calling up the contractor and yelling at them for selling you shit that's broken. Your disk array is probably where the problem is. Call up your vendor, and yell at them. Point out you have had 12 disks burnt out. Our vendor would probably send out a service engineer and take care of it. I'm sorry but no matter how fun hardware is, a true professional would know when to let another true professional do his thing

comment How to view local site on mobile?
A basic understanding of how the average consumer network works would be useful here. You ought to use the internal ip of the server. This is also ot here since no reasonable business would run a webserver on a workstation os

comment How to update IE on old WinXP system?
Windows XP should still update as of 2014, though there are no new security fixes. You should still be able to download IE from microsoft if it isn't automatically updating. As a longer term solution I suggest finding out, and getting the last version of windows offline update (V9.2.1), and an offline installer for IE that supported XP and keeping a repo of updates yourself for a rainy day, or just upgrading to a supported OS

comment What are the the potential drawbacks of using non-OEM hard drives in a server?
I'd add though that practical realworld lifespans may be higher - Someone put through a 840 pro (the consumer version of this drive) through 2 PB of writes. Quality modern SSDs (and samsung is amongst the best here) do actually often outlast their rated life cycles.

Its quality, not tenure. I notice that you have 4 flags, of which half have been rejected, apparently no reviews, and not much activity in general. With... well, the lack of track record, it might help to lay out what you intend to do as a mod.
