@davidgo non pros are TLC (and the 850s use 3d), EVOs iirc use ram to cache a bit more agressively and may have some slc or mlc cache internally for better performance. Pro is MLC.

superuser.com/questions/834521/… worth a read. Its about 10K consumer drives but many of the points are still relevant here.

Just to add, The 850 pro is the one to go for. the standard 850 uses TLC

comment How to configure TFTPD32 to ignore non PXE DHCP requests?
Just cause the editor did SUCH an awesome job, I'd like to point out the preferred, and accepted way to do markup here is markdown. You can find a primer on the local dialect of markdown by clicking on the ? on the editing box.

comment Storage issues: Prolonging the life of a legacy Compaq ML370
15 years is... a pretty good run. Its probably old enough if things started failing, things like ram and such would be hard to replace. I'd also suspect considering how much more efficient modern systems are that a modern replacement would pay for itself in a few years. Also. 8gig disks. My phone has more storage...

Where did you read it? The reasoning should be there. More context would be super useful.

It'll probably get kicked back - the fact that you're using consumer hardware probably won't go well with them. Let me check with a mod there.

off hand, I seem to think per file/directory permissions (without a forced permissions setting) on samba should do it.

comment Server destroying and burning my Hard Drives
You've burnt out 12 disks. Your way isn't working. Maybe, just maybe just listening to a guy who actually babysits much bigger, critical disk arrays might be a good idea, especially when its an easier, cheaper solution?

I'd also add that a disk array that is burning out disks is a VERY large paperweight, and the arguments about costing time is plainly illogical. Its costing you time now - every moment till you pick up that phone, or firing up the email client, and letting your enclosure vendor know he sold you a bum unit.

Professional? Professional is calling up the contractor and yelling at them for selling you shit that's broken. Your disk array is probably where the problem is. Call up your vendor, and yell at them. Point out you have had 12 disks burnt out. Our vendor would probably send out a service engineer and take care of it. I'm sorry but no matter how fun hardware is, a true professional would know when to let another true professional do his thing
