comment Using a server as an iSCSI SAN for VMWare?
joeqwerty's questions is key I think. If you aren't clustering anyway, I'd personally rather have direct local storage than either of the other 2 options you've mentioned.

The number of VMs doesn't really matter. 10 VMs could use less resources than 2 if they each had a lot of CPU cores and memory assigned to them. Leave plenty of extra memory unassigned to VMs so the parent partition can use it for the local apps at least so they can run successfully.

@Tom Shaw: Agreed that there are big benefits to external storage, especially in larger environments when you need a lot of it. I'd rather manage one big system than 50 little ones.

@Tom Shaw: I do see your point but best practices for iSCSI are more about simple design steps that don't really cost that much money. I don't think you'll find it reaches the cost of fibre even when done really well.

I agree with everything except your first sentence. While it is true that local storage would be faster, it isn't necessarily true that the poster needs that performance. He does need to understand his IO requirements before diving into a storage solution but he may find that iSCSI can meet those requirements very easily. Or not.

In my opinion iSCSI can be just as stable as fibre when implemented properly. Fibre deployments almost force you into good design where iSCSI's flexibility allows you to do it poorly when you don't do your homework.
