@dthrasher If I were stranded on a desert island with a computer, I'd want some solar power and satellite internet.

comment Apache2 - Run Apache as the user's account
Is it really so difficult to run chown and chmod to the web server's account -- if it is your server? An insecure cgi program will allow vandals to potentially look at or mess with anything owned by the web server's account.

comment Apache2 - Run Apache as the user's account
Do you mean using suexec or using cgi? When using suexec there may be a performance hit, I would imagine not too much. I've never noticed it. If CGI I think this is another question. Some programs use fastcgi, and other techniques, which are faster than regular cgi.

comment usually how long a password will be good?
I worked at a place once where your password was your name +"1234". Like Paul1234 Those passwords were, of course, good forever. If you changed it, you actually annoyed coworkers who assumed that's what it was.

comment regenerate iso file from running livecd — dd won't run reliably and genisoimage has catch-22s
Actually, I finally tested the iso produced with a loop mount, and scanned the files, and they worked fine and had the same md5s as the original cd, with the exception of isolinux which we know is modified by genisoimage. So it looks like you were right all along.

comment regenerate iso file from running livecd — dd won't run reliably and genisoimage has catch-22s
the purpose of writing the cdrom back to a file (an iso file) is to write it onto a usb stick as part of a procedure to create a bootable usb stick
