comment can a 32bit Operating System use all 8 Gigs of ram with 64bit hardware
@Richard. The question was about Windows ("Server 2008 std"). But yes, as far as I know 32 bit Mac OS X uses a 4 GiB user space. The problem with this model is the cache trashing that occurs when switching to kernel space, because you need to change the page tables.

@Ignacio: You can't. First of this is virtual address space, which doesn't map to physical memory directly. Secondly most of the kernel addresses aren't accessible at all of course.

Why the downvotes?

@mbx: Context switches are certainly more costly, but is this really measurable?

This is not entirely correct. One process can only use 2 GiB of virtual address space when running on 32 bit Windows, because the rest is used by the kernel (3 GiB if the /3G kernel parameter is used and the executable has the "large address aware" flag set).

The idle timer wasn't problem. I returned the drives in the meantime anyway.

The system is new (Athlon II X2 2,8Ghz). No I'm not using jumbo frames. But I don't think they would improve the throughput that much?

I need to import a v15 zpool, therefore I need a v15 kernel.

Kernel and RELEASE are not synchronized. I'm on p2: "No updates needed to update system to 8.1-RELEASE-p2"

Yes, and of course I rebooted.

Your answer is correct, but the issue is more problematic than thought. The drives lie about their physical sector size and ZFS fragments write down to 512 bytes because of that even if the partitions are aligned. Thanks anyway.

No I think you are right. WD15EARS do have 4096k physical sectors. I will try a reinstall tomorrow. I will accept your answer if the problems are gone :)

I heard of that but I thought the greens don't have 4K sectors. Thank you for that hint. I will try to repartition the drives accordingly.
