Why is business-class storage so expensive? These days 2-4TB SAS/SATA 7.2K drives are used for mass storage, so some of this no longer applies universally. |

Java “Could not reserve enough space for object heap” but lots of RAM free This line is your culprit: max memory size (kbytes, -m) 1048576. It is limiting the heap to 1GB maximum. I think the virtual memory one too. |

Is there a way to have a virtual machine only have one core yet use three cores on the host machine? I think you should research on the basic workings of programs - namely parallelization. If it's hard for developers to do, it's impossible for programs to do automatically. |

Our security auditor is an idiot. How do I give him the information he wants? I see no data protection issues for these requests, data protection only applies to consumers not businesses so there should be no issues with this information. --> Yup. The businesses' data isn't worth anything if it gets in the hands of competitors or criminals. LMAO @ whole stack of email. |

How do you do the offsite hard drive backups? @cherouvim, the backup box is not connected to the outside world except as necessary to execute updates. Also firewall is set to not even reply to connect requests except for an obscure SSH port. Ideally the machine should be in standby and wake up when it's time to backup/update/manage. |

How do you organise the cables in your racks? Why not use STP cables? They're cheap, well not cheaper than UTP, but for CAT5 or CAT6 they're very cheap, so why not? |

Should servers be turned off at night? Most motherboards produced from 2008 (maybe earlier) to now use solid state capacitors, which have a MUCH MUCH higher lifetime than electrolytic stuff. Power supplies are now the only place where you still see electrolytic capacitors. |

Key Things to look for in a Data Center @AX1, 40A at 110V is 4400W; at 230V it's 9200W. Unless it's high-density (Twin/Twin^2/Blade) or HPC/GPU, that's PLENTY. |

Is it safe to use consumer MLC SSDs in a server? @peterchen, you can use either a couple of SSDs or fifty 15K spindles. |

Economical way to get many harddrives into rack mount? @Hubert, no you can't with that design, because you need to remove the PSU casing from the chassis to remove the PSUs. Backblaze pod is just a horrible design when the data has any value. In their case, the data is not valuable, but storage is king. |
