comment Application Settings outside of web.config
Those will be global across all sites in IIS. What I need is a way to store per-site settings without having them overwritten when redeploying.

comment Why is Enterprise Storage so expensive?
@MDMarra, most are not much more different than their desktop variants: aside from SAS, they have better warranty and are binned for reliability.

comment Why is Enterprise Storage so expensive?
These days 2-4TB SAS/SATA 7.2K drives are used for mass storage, so some of this no longer applies universally.

comment Java “Could not reserve enough space for object heap” but lots of RAM free
This line is your culprit: max memory size (kbytes, -m) 1048576. It is limiting the heap to 1GB maximum. I think the virtual memory one too.

comment Is there a way to have a virtual machine only have one core yet use three cores on the host machine?
I think you should research on the basic workings of programs - namely parallelization. If it's hard for developers to do, it's impossible for programs to do automatically.

comment Our security auditor is an idiot. How do I give him the information he wants?
I see no data protection issues for these requests, data protection only applies to consumers not businesses so there should be no issues with this information. --> Yup. The businesses' data isn't worth anything if it gets in the hands of competitors or criminals. LMAO @ whole stack of email.

Any updates? It's been 3 days.

comment How do you do the offsite hard drive backups?
@cherouvim, the backup box is not connected to the outside world except as necessary to execute updates. Also firewall is set to not even reply to connect requests except for an obscure SSH port. Ideally the machine should be in standby and wake up when it's time to backup/update/manage.

comment How do you organise the cables in your racks?
Why not use STP cables? They're cheap, well not cheaper than UTP, but for CAT5 or CAT6 they're very cheap, so why not?

comment Should servers be turned off at night?
Most motherboards produced from 2008 (maybe earlier) to now use solid state capacitors, which have a MUCH MUCH higher lifetime than electrolytic stuff. Power supplies are now the only place where you still see electrolytic capacitors.

comment Key Things to look for in a Data Center
@AX1, 40A at 110V is 4400W; at 230V it's 9200W. Unless it's high-density (Twin/Twin^2/Blade) or HPC/GPU, that's PLENTY.

comment Is it safe to use consumer MLC SSDs in a server?
@peterchen, you can use either a couple of SSDs or fifty 15K spindles.

comment Economical way to get many harddrives into rack mount?
@Hubert, no you can't with that design, because you need to remove the PSU casing from the chassis to remove the PSUs. Backblaze pod is just a horrible design when the data has any value. In their case, the data is not valuable, but storage is king.

@CyberShadow, you could use MPM Apache and mod_fcgid + suPHP.

comment RAID 10, how layout works?
@micmcg, RAID10 is a nested RAID level. @Bastien974, in RAID10 you first mirror disks (RAID 1), then stripe them (RAID 0).

comment Economical way to get many harddrives into rack mount?
@Hubert, you can't stick redundant PSUs in the Backblaze pod really. Besides, the BB pod has three RAID 5 arrays (RAID 50), each with a LOT of disks. It's just a horrible design for anything that needs any sort of reliability. And yes, a month is a pretty good guess; they're big arrays with 1.5TB drives; an unrecoverable read error is almost a given during rebuild.

comment Economical way to get many harddrives into rack mount?
@Hubert, SATA II doesn't add expanders, it adds port multipliers, which are horrible. SAS expanders are far better.

Backblade pods ARE HORRIBLE. They are painfully slow, rebuilding the arrays will take A WHOLE MONTH, losing ONE SINGLE PSU will result in the loss of ALL THE DATA STORED ON IT. That's... not that great; they're all "home user" parts, not designed to run 24/7.

comment What causes hard disk failures?
The heads will instantly jump to the parked state on any modern hard-drive; the HDD has really strong magnets pulling the heads towards their parking spot, so if power is lost the electromagnet in the heads cuts off and they will jump to their "bed".

comment Dell PERC H700 - 3x RAID 1?
if you could flash the LSI firmware that would be great; coupled with expanders, it can RAID 240 drives.
