Because the Nic was responding to pings but not RDP, it could still be software or hardware but that Raid rebuils makes me think Harddrive or Raid controller. Good Luck and I hope you ind the culprit soon. ;)

comment Windows Authentication over site-to-site VPN
It'll recieve the IP from the local network, the VPN will translate it. As for the Xerox, I have not found anything definative but check out the internal config website of the printer and see if you can disable or change the time of the sleep-mode
