comment How to host files from public_html while still preserving security of ~/.ssh/
+1, but please correct "Anonymous" to "All", as noted by staticsan.

I think OpenSSH will, because write access (note the a+rwx) to /home/steve means any user can mv /home/steve/.ssh /home/steve/.ssh.old then create a new /home/steve/.ssh and corresponding authorized_keys. But in that case, checking that steve owned authorized_keys should still be sufficient, so I'm not sure why.

comment Passwords longer than 8 letter in Red Hat 4
It could be using the older crypt algorithm rather than something newer like MD5 or Blowfish, for backwards compatibility. Doesn't really explain the 8-char/16-char discrepancy, but searching for "NIS" and "MD5" might help.

comment How to get given users “Desktop Path”
They specifically asked for a general and correct way, which also handles the case where the directory is not called "Desktop".

comment IPTables: allow SSH access only, nothing else in or out
Thanks for picking that up MadHatter. RELATED? It says things like ICMP errors (hopefully related to the connection attempt) are "RELATED". So if the server is not running, you'd get an ICMP port unreachable immediately. But honestly, it's just an incantation I now type without thinking. What's the downside?
