Is your server 64-bit or 32-bit. Is AWE enabled?

Not so much - the limitation is a top amount for SQL Server. SQL will begin to flush buffer pages to disk in order to free up memory when this threshold is approached. Like Charles said, it will not be great performance, but it will save your server from crashing due to lack of memory.

Not 100% sure then. I'd try running xp_logininfo 'DOMAIN\GROUP', 'members' and see if there is a disparity between that user's name and his mapped login name. The mapped login name is what SQL Server is using.

I agree that its the absolute last thing to do, shrink the file. Correct maintenance obviates the need for this. But once its big and you want it smaller, you have to shrink it. However, when shrinking, it's better to shrink the file as small as possible, then grow the file to the correct size in 8GB increments. This will optimize the number of VLFs in the file.
