comment Files served from Apache are slower than other methods
You need to be specific about what and how you are testing. With performance metrics, details are very important. The testing strategy, hosting platform, network status and server status can all significantly impact results.

Also search google for setting up bind on CentOS 5. Plenty of tutorials are there.

comment Simple DNS for 1 domain configuration
Unless you are just wanting to learn to manage bind, I suggest you use your domain providers or 3rd party DNS. Running your own DNS server for 1 domain is a bit of an overkill.

comment Forward all Subdomains to another domain (with subdomain intact)
*.domain.com is just a wild card domain name. This is required so the same domain will answer for all sub domains.

comment Are there any drawbacks to running memcached on a Unix domain socket instead of the network (assuming one server)?
Actaully would "expect" it to be faster due to the lack of TCP/IP overhead but you never know until you test.

comment SSH occasionally (rarely) doesn't connect
In this case it would not be on a non standard port as he's looping the connection and it is known to work on port 22.

comment Setting MTU Per Destination Host
Not sure with MacOS specifically, but it should support MTU Path Discovery as it is partly based on FreeBSD. I would look for MacOS related info for MTU Path Discovery.
