comment Why does httpd seem to use a different version of python with the same executable?
But by the time my wsgi app is invoked, python is already running, and is using the wrong version.

OK, done. I did "LD_RUN_PATH=/usr/local/lib make" (clean) and "sudo make install". Doing an ldd on the resulting library (with LD_LIBRARY_PATH empty) shows "libpython2.7.so.1.0 => /usr/local/lib/libpython2.7.so.1.0 (0x00002b01f2199000)". But I still see the same result. (Note that in the comment above, I meant LD_LIBRARY_PATH, not LD_LIBRARY_THREAD).

The ldd output for mod_wsgi.so includes "libpython2.7.so.1.0". If I run it with LD_LIBRARY_THREAD unset, it says "=> not found". The only libpython* under /usr/lib is /usr/lib/python2.4/config/libpython2.4.a. No WSGIPythonHome is set.

@tfitzgerald Yes, I made sure of that. In fact I rebuilt it again (clean) just to make sure.

comment How can I forward email to a perl script on Linux?
@adamo: Good idea. When I do that, it still fails but this time the bounce email says "permission denied". The script and all the directories are all 0755. /usr/local/bin/perl is a link to /usr/bin/perl which is 0755 as well. I've tried setting the owner of the script to mail.mail, no change. If I run the script as user mail (su -m mail -c /etc/smrsh/handle_email.pl), it runs properly.

Thanks, but nope. Tried changing permissions and restarting sendmail, same result.

I copied that file into the php directory and now httpd crashes when I try to connect to the database. At least I have the DLL now! Thanks

Yes, I've already read all of that. It says "the php_mysql.dll DLL must be enabled inside of php.ini" but I don't have php_mysql.dll.

I think the suggestion that it's a myth is a myth. :-)

comment With an expert Sys admin, are windows and linux equal for security
@vartec: The servers aren't the target because they usually have some competent administrator looking after them. For every web server you "recruit" for your botnet, there are potentially thousands of web client machines (mostly Windows) that you could be using whose users are far less likely to notice.

comment Which ports to use on a self-written tcp server
Not true, there are lots of ports above 1024 that are reserved by IANA (see Murali Suriar's answer). Port numbers above 49152 are not reserved.

I use Caps Lock all the time for just such a test. That may, however, be the only real use for Caps Lock...

Yes, that's all I meant. I wasn't implying "Windows people are dumb", being a Windows guy myself. :-)
