comment How frequently should SMART be run on a disk?
SMART tests do not impose any "stress" on the disk and will not shorten their life. I am using the same schedule (daily short tests, weekly long tests) on all the systems I manage (including both mechanical disks and SSDs), dozens of disks have passed through this in the last years.

I'd rather say "it is currently useless to do this"... but if correctly implemented it would really useful (think about freeing thin disk blocks when VM sends out TRIM and/or propagate TRIM to underlying storage).
