comment htaccess vrs httpd.conf?
Thanks. Nice answer. So the consensus seems to be that .htacess files are still evil, but not necessarily because of the server load issue. I'll admit I hadn't considered the security side of it. Looks like I need to get familiar with "reload" and "include".

comment Apache uptime question
It is a physical machine, but I don't know the specs. IT don't let me near the actual box. From what I can tell (I'm a linux newbie) it's got 133GB HD (86% full), 4* 2.8GHz Xeon CPU, and 1034656kB RAM. Boy i hope I'm reading that wrong. 1GB RAM? My desktop machine has more than that :(

Thanks for that. I'm not the Sys Admin, but I'm am trying to understand enough about the situation so that I don't sound like a complete idiot when I go to them and talk about some of this stuff.

We have both a public internet site and our intranet site on the one server. The machine crashes regularly, but in the absence of anyone else looking into why, I've decided to try and work out what the problem is by myself. We are using CF6. But I also suspect some attack ATM which surely isn't helping things. I'll look at the access logs and see if I can glean some information from them.
