I have over 30 years experience in all phases of software development and delivery. I have administered a variety of midrange servers, and worked with systems from PCs to Mainframes.

comment SMTP errors with iOS devices
Blacklisting for an initial failure seems excessive, and the log seems to indicate that they are not blacklisted. The initial connection is dropped after a few failures, which is normal mail server behavior. It is not uncommon to get connections using the wrong protocol. The second connection completes a secure login and disconnects. This should not be considered a failure, and should not get the device blacklisted either.

IOS defaults to SSL (secure connection) and then offers to connect insecurely if that fails. After the SSL connection fails the user is given the option to connect insecurely. If STARTTLS is available, it is used. The activities involved in the connection discovery are being logged by the server. These are log messages, not errors. I wouldn't expect this level of detail in a log unless debugging was enabled. I would expect other devices and software to behave the same when discovering the server.

@ChrisB. Yes, it will exit the remote shell, but ssh should return with the exit value so you can test locally.

@pregmatch Not sure why you need to worry about Dovecot UID in procmail. Procmail's default processing works well with Dovecot. See my edit.

@user1862165 That doesn't rule out and FSD command from a script. Log everything and it will help you debug the issue. The UPS may also be sending a message that gets misinterpreted as low battery. Low battery is based on a signal from the UPS not but NUT.

@user1862165 It is possible to schedule a script when ONBATT which will cause a timed shutdown. Logging all notifications will tell you why the system is going down. I would expect it will be either a low battery notification from the UPS or a forced shutdown from a script.
