comment Serve a custom 404 page generated by PHP
True but I was hoping for something like this: Nginx (not a static resource) => PHP app (not a route, return empty 404) => Nginx (404, intercept error) => redirect to /404 => PHP app (generates the 404 page).

If I did, I would have to handle myself 404 errors in my application (to show the /404 page). IMO that's not a perfect solution (because I need to implement that at the PHP level, instead of Nginx), but I couldn't find any other so that's what I did.

My apologies for not trying directly, I was sure there was something wrong. But you were right, the redirection works now! A very warm thank you :)

That makes sense. But when I apply this, I get the following error: nginx: [emerg] could not build the server_names_hash, you should increase server_names_hash_bucket_size: 32 :( And that doesn't make sense because my domain name is not that long.

PHP + Apache to serve it. But the whole point of Vagrant (that I love) is that the hosting don't care about what's in there. I can install whatever I want. I also have NodeJS project that I'd love to be able to deploy like that. That's so easy once everything is set up. I hate doing sysadmin.

comment Forward access to Apache on a virtual machine (vmware)
I don't want to have to modify the hosts file of every computer on my LAN (and I can't). Anyway the proxy prevents those computers to reach my VM because it (the proxy) doesn't know the VM.

I also recommend using the following script: forge.mysql.com/tools/tool.php?id=80.
