Just a guy with no blog. Oh, and I know a lot about Python. Some other things too.

comment netstat shows a listening port with no pid but lsof does not
You shouldn't have been downvoted as this is a totally legit answer. It helped me find a case where the other answers (using rpcbind or lsof) didn't help. (And yes, it was NFS.) Thanks!

comment Is this how LVM snapshots work?
@benoit the link in the answer's first line covers this. Read the note there on LVM1 read-only snapshot behaviour and I think you'll have your answer. (It's the first approach you describe, not the second.)

comment Ordinary users are able to read /etc/passwd, is this a security hole?
Depending on the system in question, it can be a necessity, not merely a decision. For example, generally sftp and scp access is broken if this file is not world readable. And if you say having those available is a design decision... well duh. Then it's a design decision even to have your server up, and the point need not have been made.

comment How to setup etckeeper with Mercurial in Ubuntu?
Worth noting (for rookies) that "sudo apt-get install mercurial" will be needed if it's not already installed, followed by appropriate configuration (probably of ~/.hgrc) as described in the output of "hg help config".

I just set up a new system with the advice from @sybreon, and had the same "missing username" error. Your second step, adding the username to the [ui] section of (in my case) ~/.hgrc, was sufficient to get past the problem. I don't think the HG_COMMIT_OPTIONS part is required.

comment What is the difference between UDP and TCP?
actually, you changed it to TFPT rather than TFTP... Unfortunately I have as yet too little rep to fix it for you.

comment Any non-custom way to manage iptables with fail2ban and libvirt+kvm?
For now, I put my own script first (called by an S14iptables-setup init.d script), flushing/clearing everything and adding my own rules, then allowing fail2ban and libvirt to do their thing, which they do without disturbing my rules. I don't get good dynamic control, and if either tool is stopped it may mess things up, but I'm functional... still, after all these years, this is pathetic if it's the best we can do.

comment What software do you recommend for extranet fileserver access?
That page has been deleted. The next best I could find (probably built from some version of that page) is list.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_web_based_file_managers
