"All right, guys, uh, listen. This is a blues riff in "B", watch me for the changes, and try and keep up?"

-1 This is irrelevant for a VM, and even for the host, ext4 works fine.

comment VMWare Image and Compression
If the disk is a "Thick" disk, i.e. it has been pre-allocated, and it is mostly empty, then he can convert it to "thin" prior to putting it on the ESXi box, so it won't take up all his space (although it will shut off when he runs out of space, but that is another issue).

Have you tried it in maintenance mode? You mention that you put the server in maintenance mode, but then rebooted afterwards, presumably exiting form maintenance mode. You should be able to delete it, I've performed the procedure you've described a couple of times, and didn't have any problems.

Right. The greens apparently have 512 byte sectors. But (some of them, at least) also apparently report 4K sectors erroneously.

I'm curious: why are you trying to do this?

comment How to monitor / control file IO in Xen virtual machines
+1 for a great question. I'd imagine they have to be able to do it, because VMware ESX(i) can set a limit for IOPS per virtual disk on a VM.
