comment is mod_deflate 's default configuration ok to use in a production setup?
It certainly won't hurt to use that in a production setup, but it looks pretty conservative, and is probably based on reality as it stood several years ago. I'm hoping the super-geniuses here will post an "optimal" mod_deflate configuration for today's world.

comment Taking this, and making that
This will probably get moved over to Stack Overflow, and then closed as a duplicate of stackoverflow.com/questions/1513861/…. I had to strongly resist the urge to simply copy and paste the accepted answer over there to this thread, just for the potential rep points, but that would be cheating, IMHO.

comment Ethernet NC lines and Switches
@Evan Anderson "I don't know what I was thinking (other than not thinking) when I made that comment." covers a majority of my comments, and a few of my answers, unfortunately. It is nice to know that I'm not the only one.

@Evan Anderson Actually, full duplex operation with 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX still only uses two of the 4 pairs.

Is this question about the "VMware View" product (vmware.com/products/view)? Or is it about "viewing VMware"?

@Dennis thanks for setting me straight, I wasn't really thinking hard enough about it. If the script being run sets variables, then does an export of those variables, those will be seen by the parent (shell|script), correct?

don't blame yourself, blame Server Fault. It shouldn't have popped up on the main page if it is over 3 months old and the OP hasn't bothered to create an account here.

Yes, I suspect you could have run ". /etc/profile", but now I'm curious: what exactly did you try that failed and what was the error message? I thought your initial question was saying that "source" wasn't found, but now I'm thinking it was something else.

Did you do it with a space between the dot and the /etc/profile? That is what I was suggesting, and I actually learned that it is a shortcut for the source bash builtin with a question on stackoverflow (stackoverflow.com/questions/2518127/…). If you did it without the space, then you were basically just executing /etc/profile as a script, which will work just the same, if it is executable.
