comment Reinitialize /etc/profile file
Yes, I suspect you could have run ". /etc/profile", but now I'm curious: what exactly did you try that failed and what was the error message? I thought your initial question was saying that "source" wasn't found, but now I'm thinking it was something else.

comment Reinitialize /etc/profile file
Did you do it with a space between the dot and the /etc/profile? That is what I was suggesting, and I actually learned that it is a shortcut for the source bash builtin with a question on stackoverflow (stackoverflow.com/questions/2518127/…). If you did it without the space, then you were basically just executing /etc/profile as a script, which will work just the same, if it is executable.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing that requires modems connected to your webserver?

comment very Slow machine when searching the network
-1 for suggesting random changes to NIC link speed without explaining what that means. I hate encountering systems that have their link speed hard-coded for no good reason because some engineer though it would be a good idea to try it out.

comment Could not use domain name instead of static IP
@Nam Gi VU That means that DNS is not configured properly for the domain. The fact that it works inside the office in UK indicates that they have a DNS server in that office that is configured with the domain, but it isn't configured to share that information with the rest of the world. They need to change the configuration of the DNS server so that you can look up the domain properly.

comment Which esxi server is a VM on?
@Chopper3 Can you point me to some of those? And what search terms/methods you used to find them? I've searched for similar questions and haven't been able to find anything. Thanks.

comment IMAP mailboxes Backup script
You'll probably get some better responses if you can share what type of IMAP server you have, what operating system it is on, and what kind of scripting languages you are comfortable with.

I was wrong on my initial comment. The question is about SMTP authentication, not SNMP authentication.

I think the question is about SNMP [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snmp], not SMTP [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smtp].

comment How do I restore to a delta file (disk) on Vmware ESXi
@Helvick +1 Thanks. That is what I suspected, but it is something I would have tried without knowing for sure. I think basically Step 1. and Step 8. are the only ones here that are worth anything.

comment Max ping response time?
@Graeme +1. I've seen responses like that too, but from broken packet shaper boxes that seemed to be queuing forever when things got congested. It was not uncommon for me to get ping responses as much as 10 minutes later. Yes, that is 600,000 ms. That sort of thing should be outlawed. And this was as recently as 2008.

comment Should I keep my ex-employer's data?
+1 for exactly the answer I was going to give (ok, not quite exact, I was going to say burn it onto a CD/DVD). Same difference. Wish I could give an extra +1 for sending by courier, so you have a record of the delivery. Make sure to send them a nice letter letting them know you aren't trying to threaten them about backups, but you don't want to be responsible should things go bad.

comment How can I copy a Virtual Machine on VMWare ESXi 4 while maintaining Thin Provisioning?
@Billy ONeal Really it isn't any faster? How big are your VMs? I can backup and re-deploy a copy of a 30GB vm in about 5 minutes (the particular OVF I'm working with now compresses down to about a gig). Additionally, this is script-able, so you don't have to sit around and wait for the converter.

Also, the ovftool can be used to deploy to VMware Server 2, which is really handy. Almost everything is the same, except the disk mode needs to be monolithicSparse to be the equivalent of thin.

@Billy ONeal, No, it works fine with the free version of ESXi. I just tested it to an ESXi box that is using the free license.
