comment How to [politely?] tell software vendor they don't know what they're talking about
Inside a VM the usual tools (taskmanager, top etc) can act weird. Sometimes IMHO they appear to report on the resources the VM is currently given by the host, not necessarily what has been granted by the host. That aside, look closely at the peaks when they happen (a monthly CPU view is only a meaningless average), check IO and SAN. Check they configured their database and application properly to use more cores and memory? Performance problems are difficult to trace, I always start with the network cables and work up from there. A half duplex network connection or faulty cable can do it.

comment Exchange 2007 databases keep growing exponentially - Why?
is it the database that is growing? or is it the backup of the database that is growing? I once found an Exchange backup job that was set to append to the backup, not replace it.

comment How do I protect business critical data against fire?
only fire? what about a water pipe bursting and flooding the safe? a tornado carrying off the safe? There is no substitute for offsite backup. Comparing the cost of disks to the cost of a safe is invalid, you need to compare it to the cost of losing your webcast inventory.

comment Probability of Blade Chassis Failure
Have you looked at what Dell has in their C servers? e.g. the C6100 has 4 nodes in a 2U box, an equivalent of a 4 slot blade chassis. Instead of one 10U blade chassis you could get five 2U rack servers. No longer a single point of failure but you lose the backplane advantages. Possibly HP/IBM have an equivalent product.

comment Will any SAS drive work in a Dell PowerEdge server?
+1, and ordering a bigger drive is a good idea. Have had some difficulties with 74Gb drives, the replacements we got were 74.3 but the original drives in the RAID volume are all 74.4 Check the disk spec/dimensions very carefully before ordering replacements.

comment Compressed network file copy
We use Deltacopy on our MSSQL backups. It is a windows implementation of rsync. It does a nice job of compressing and saving bandwidth by only sending parts of the files.

comment Question on backups for a very small business
If you have walking media then make sure you use some level of encryption. If a disk goes missing and you had no data protection you might have some explaining to do to your clients.
