ah, thanks for the info on errcode 13. Actually though, the folder is already owned by mysql:mysql (which is my mysql user) and has the right permissions. I think it must have been something related to apparmor... anyway, changing the paths to local worked. (I suppose because mysql was able to get to this directory)

hmm, but I definitely had the directory. I was doing things like copying the file path from the error message and sticking ls before it, and watching the file show up that it was claiming not to see.

strangely, removing the full path from the binlog & relay log paths has allowed it to work. I'm not sure why.
