comment VOIP and internet connection speeds [cable vs. fiber]
May I ask who the vendor was? Hopefully we haven't made the same mistake :/

Have you had issues with latency? Thanks for the reply.

QoS is definitely going to be part of the solution regardless of which option we go with. Is latency a result of clogged pipes, or just the way of life when dealing with cable? Thanks!

comment Change Win7 desktop background via Win2k3 Group Policy
thanks for the tip! For now, though, everything seems to be working fine (default wallpapers), so I'm inclined to leave well-enough alone. But, when I need to restore one of the machines, or add new ones I will come back to this if it's still not working. Thanks again.

comment mount multiple folders with nfs4 on centos
Nope. I tried both changing each line of exports to fsid=1, fsid=2 respectively and fsid=0, fsid=1 respectively and I get Operation not permitted errors.

comment mount multiple folders with nfs4 on centos
I still get a folder not found error.mount.nfs4: 192.168.200.201:/var/shared/folder1 failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory Also get: 'vers=4' is not supported. Use '-t nfs4' instead. Thanks!

The files will be on the same machine outside the db, so stunnel will work both for that and connecting to the db.

Thanks! That did it.

Thanks, but the tl;dr of your link amounts to the same tl;dr in the first link I tried (social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverGP/thread/…). I added the referenced registry key, but no change.

comment Windows PE network setup
I guess I wasn't totally clear - sorry. But the problem was lack of driver, so #2 was exactly what I needed. I followed the instructions in your link, injected the driver, re-made the iso, and I have network connectivity! Thanks very much.

I guess this was one of those rare occurrences. After mounting the .wim to inject the driver, I looked in the INF folder, and indeed the driver wasn't in there. Thanks!

comment Windows 7 AIK help
All I have is the OEM disks. I tried doing as you said and copied the sources directory to a local drive, deleted all .clg files except Professional, opened that .clg in AIK, created new answer file, and went through all the steps. I saved it to the USB key (after deleting the old on on there), and tried the install again. It is still prompting me to choose which version, though. Is it because I'm using an OEM disk for the install? Thanks.

It's an OEM disk, but I think the new standard for Win is to share libraries across versions, therefore the install disks have all versions on them, but you're limited by license as to which you can use.

Thanks for the response. I forgot to mention, though, that I will also be storing files on the db server so it looks like stunnel will work better in this case.

comment Encrypt uploaded pdf files with mcrypt and php
I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I need to be able to encrypt files being uploaded, not generated. After looking at TCPDF documentation, I'm not clear on whether or not it can do this (it looks more like it is for generating pdf rather than working with existing pdf files)? It'd also be nice if I could integrate with mcrypt as I could use the current key management system and it would hopefully be portable to other formats (xls, doc, etc). Much thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the post. I looked into the native SSL support -- and it looks promising. However, I remembered today that I will also be storing files on the MySQL database server (outside of the db), so stunnel looks to be a better fit in this case. Thanks again!

comment The A to Z of setting up a Linux box for secure local hosting
@Milan:Since the setup is local only, I have the luxury of way more available IP addresses than I'll ever need. Setting up additional interfaces, I've found, is a rather quick and painless process comparatively. If I were setting up this system for public use, thanks to Apache2.2.x and TLS upgrades, VirtualHost seems to work better with SSL: serverfault.com/questions/109766/…

@Milan because I will have multiple domains/subdomains on this machine. In order to use VirtualHost and SSL Each domain/subdomain will need to have its' own IP address. httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/ssl/ssl_faq.html#vhosts

comment Mysql Encryption and Key managment
Wow! Amazing and thorough answer; thank you very much. Over the past few days, I've been considering some options, and have decided to try and implement a client-side solution as you suggested. Ideally, keys will be stored on thumb drives that will only be mounted while a user is working on the system (physical security is very tight) and the key held in memory only as long as the session lives. Idea being that the keys will only be accessible to the system during working hours when I am there to monitor traffic, etc.

Thanks for the reply! I'm not so concerned about backups. I'm more concerned about someone exploiting a users machine and then accessing the site from there either through SQL injection, or bruting a users' application credentials. I'm not too concerned about the machine itself; the credentials for su are very strong (I'm under no illusion that it's 100% secure, though).
