"not recommended" was an overstatement, I agree. But "most flexible" does not necessarily means "most recommended". Clarified.

I love playing with pipes and command lines, but that doesnt apply here. 'find' is not fed from stdin but from som path in some filesystem

I know that, but find lets you specify a lot of criteria and logic (sizes, timestamps), tar+grep falls a little short.

But, say, does yum know about a package that was installed via apt-get ? Suppose I installed package P1 via yum, then I try to install package P2 via apt-get, and P2 depends on P1 : would apt-get know that P1 is already installed or would it try to install it itself?
