comment What is the maximum number of files (or folders) that can be stored in a single folder?
In production we have a folder with a couple million files. Don't even try to use Windows Explorer, it never returns. We wrote our own tools to find filenames by naming pattern in order to manipulate the results.

Appreciate your efforts, and was directing this question to admins who in their environments have similar circumstances. This type of admin would work in a company that processes large volumes of files per day, perhaps tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of files, as I do. Some portion of those files aren't needed beyond a given time frame and can be reclaimed. And yes I have written a utility to do this prior and am writing a new one to do all the above and more. It's smarter not to reinvent.

Not at all correct. We know the value of files based on the folder they are located in. Many of these folders accumulate thousands of files rather quickly, so I am looking to automate their deletion. There are hundreds of these folders in various hierarchies, and not every subfolder should have its contents deleted, thus why I need the rules-based processing.

DiskCleanup is completely INADEQUATE and doesn't even begin to address the requirements. I'm looking to automatically delete files and folders from network folder locations that are not amount the choices in the sageset options. I'm not looking for how to clean temp files and other special folders on a Windows XP computer, or I would have gone to superuser.

Disk Cleanup does not provide automated unmonitored rule-based deletion.

edited to not speak of a specific product that accomplishes these things. we wouldn't want to know what someone's using, just that they're using one. right?
