comment LAMP Web Site Performance - Need Help
Can you give the rought stats of the site during peak hours - req / minute? What cpu spec is the VPS (to put a load of 20 into perspective - if it's a single core then this is v. bad)

comment [SVN]: How to backup repository?
As others have said, directly backing up a repository from the filesystem is generally considered a bad habbit. If a commit is taking place when your backup script fires, you're going to find yourself in a world of pain if you need to restore.

If it's similar to where I've worked, the solution would involve quickly removing the offending finger and replacing it with a large quantity of duct tape. (And then intending to schedule downtime of the machine to remove the tape, but putting it off for 18 months until until the tape finally fails).

comment Dell PowerEdge server acoustic noise
To move a given quantity of air, smaller fans must run at a higher RPM and therefore make more noise than larger, slower fans. 2 or 4u cases also have the advantage of providing more space and flexibility to route (via shrouds / ducting) the airflow around components: a 2u server may have fewer, larger, quieter fans than a 1u server of equivalent spec'.

comment Is S.M.A.R.T. smart to use?
-1 for failing to not only correctly read the abstract of the paper, but for failing to take the time to read the whole thing. Drive failure is generally down to either a manufacturing defect (as shown in Fig 3: high usage in the first 3 months weeds out component errors - after that failure due to usage begins to converge), or degradation over time. Degradation over time is what SMART will pick up. Fig 5 shows that temperature is not a big factor at all - indeed the report suggests cooler drives have more of a change of failure than those running hot, certainly inside the first 3 years.

comment How do you track and debug mySQL performance issues?
15 seconds was a comment in general about web-apps - if bugzilla routinely takes this long for queries then there must be something seriously wrong with it period.

comment What is the best enterprise virus-scanning system?
In my experience, Symantec puts too large a foot-print in terms of resource usage on the end-user desktops to make it a viable option. I've also found that it's not actually that great at picking up threats: on more than one occasion I've had to clean an infected PC that had Symantec installed, up to date and claiming the pc was just fine.
