comment Emailing hundreds of thousands of users for a newletter, company server or service?
+1 - This is definitely best offloaded to a service unless you want to make email a huge part of your business. We've used Constant Contact before, they seem ok.

"Tomorrow" is now "yesterday." :-) Any updates? I'm really curious about this now.

Have you tried checking the status of the hard disk after Ghosting? Does the primary partition get created and marked active? Or perhaps the boot loader is mixed up somehow and bootsect or fixboot will help?

comment Better folder structure for 1-6mil files?
There's a lot of factors that go into this decision, but have you thought about storing the files as blobs inside the database? I'm normally not a fan of that kind of plan, but it's looking like there might be a good case for it here.

comment Does the number of files slow down the server?
Large filesystems can expose weaknesses in other areas of the system or applications. For example, most file-based backup software is going to take a long time to do an initial backup on such systems, simply because processing all that metadata involves tons of small disk I/O -- the death knell for performance on normal HDs. Software that doesn't take any FS-level enhancements into consideration (like USN Change Journals for NTFS) to keep up with incremental changes will also perform badly.

Unplug their PCs from the switch. Let both your and their supervisors know that they're running hacking software on their PCs and could get you into a ton of hot water.

@SergeyVlasov: Thanks for the information -- I've updated my answer with those items for extra clarification.

Note that WSUS Offline is not an MS product, and that it doesn't check the same patches that WU/MU does

comment Dealing with long DNS names for websites
worst case, a dynamic DNS client could be used for free. But I agree, having your own domain is better.

The tricky part is that since the university controls DNS, they may not want to grant the request.

comment Is there a way to have a virtual machine only have one core yet use three cores on the host machine?
@Chris S: True, but they're getting that 81 months worth of work done in 18.

+1 - I'll buy RAM from Crucial since they'll guarantee compatibility and have a lifetime warranty. They're not the cheapest, but they're much less than OEM.

comment Are there any legal, free, sources for the Arial Narrow font definitions, to deploy on a Windows 2003 server?
@nhek: Good idea, but I didn't see the fonts in the installer for PowerPoint 2007 Viwer I have handy. Just the C* fonts (Calibri, Cambria, Consolas, etc.) Other viewers may though.
