comment What is a useful “transfer large things” method/medium?
@cjc, what happens if the weighted companion cube gets...accidentially...incinerated? I hope you have backups.

@Angelo, the VirtualBox Manual is a very good place to start.

comment Which hardware to VM ratio for Build-Server virtualization?
While SSDs are nice to have, it's all down to a matter of cost/benefit.

thanks. ServerFault tends to take a dim view of self-promotion, regardless of how minor - that's just the way we are.

@Safado - I don't know if it is - I was asking for clarification as the OP does not make it obvious.

Hang on, so your Server 2008 machine is in work and you are trying to connect to it from home? And the webserver/database server is directly connected to the internet?

@user1034912 - yes, it's staggering. But this is Google, so why the hell not? There are thousands of datacenters worldwide, Google happens to operate a tiny fraction of them.

comment Software RAID setup questions
@Sirex, Server 2008 only supports software RAID 0, 1 or 5, not 10. I'd rather chance my data with RAID 5 (as it's backed up elsewhere) than running an unfamilliar OS that does have RAID 6/10 support.

comment Software RAID setup questions
@tq, sometimes, the sheer amount of data people has makes online backups unviable - but, for your most treasured photos and documents it's not a bad idea.

comment Hosting server's harddisk crashed
I would be majorly, majorly pissed if I knew they were using just one disk (not in a mirror, or RAID, just stand-alone) to host my site. Backups are one thing but not looking after disk integrity is inexcuseable. All I can is good luck.

comment Windows 7 network fallback from LAN to WiFi
You could see if changing the network metric. Windows will automatically use the network connetion with the lowest metric, so see if my answer to this question on SU would help.

comment Thin Client Environments - Where to Start
You are going to have to add a lot more information that just "what do I need". It would depend on a lot of factors, including number of users, estimated server load, and, naturally, budget.

comment HP ProLiant ML350 G6 Server
What have you tried to do so far? HP's technical documentation is quite good so if the answer to my question above is "nothing" at least see if the HP site has any setting up RAID guides - what RAID controller does the server have?

comment wds: deploying applications too?
As Bart has metioned, WDS is just for system images - but don't forget the system image could contain commonly-used software. You might run into activation/license issues with things like Office though. The way our build process works is that the system gets re-imaged and then Office pushed out through GPO. We have CS5 on some of our laptops as well - they are part of the image as we had issues trying to deploy several GB of stuff over a MSI.
