If nothing else, it is respectful to the people who answer your questions to allow them to tweet you to say, "I gave you a rock'n answer a few weeks ago, but you haven't given any feedback. Did it work for you?" or "Hey there are comments on your question asking for more details, but you are not giving us what we need to help you properly."

You don't mention: Host OS, MySQL version, storage engines used. You cannot get good advice without sharing those details.

Yeah, you'd need to use something like awk instead of grep. Because I cannot get legible formatting in a comment, I'll post it in another answer.

Local replication is probably the solution for you. If you are able to modify you application to segregate reads (keeping them local) and writes (sending them to the master), then you are in business. If you are able to do this, you should also be able to modify the app to use memcached. If you can't modify the app, then you could use MySQL Proxy to do the segregation.

info about the data source/format, MySQL version, preferred destination engine, and intended use after load would help us give you an excellent answer.

While I have great respect for bash-fu, these are inappropriate uses. You are obviously skilled and would benefit from getting familiar with dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/information-schema.html and the uber-useful dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/… The GROUP_CONCAT is very useful for generating valid SQL with SQL which is then piped to a secondary mysql call. I demonstrate this here: serverfault.com/questions/8860/…

comment MySQL 5.1.34 on NFS w/NetApp
Please specify which logs you are concerned about separating. I would assume you mean the ib_logfile* and I can understand your concern. If I found that I needed to squeeze out a little extra performance I would still separate it as I said in my answer, and just understand that I will have to recover it from local storage (or where ever) to repair after a crash. However, I see no risk in separating the mysql-bin.* or (shudder) mysqld.log (aka:General Query Log) if you happen to use them. I would strongly advise against the latter.
