This seems to have solved the problem, I should mention.

@GeekyDeaks: Sounds like a good idea, though I don't know how to make use of the resultant cifs.pcap file to make those determinations.

Good idea. I've put this in place, and will see what happens.

@cornelinux: In this case, neither server is crashing.

@c4f4t0r: How do I check? I don't believe it ever goes into a "hard" hibernate mode. At most, a "soft" screensaver mode.

Most of these timeouts in the documentation you linked are just a few hundred seconds, with the largest being 20 minutes. With the network I have, the two machines in question can both stay idle for several hours, and the CIFS connection does not have any problems. The problem behaviour described is sporadic and I do not know any steps to reproduce it, other than "use the machines normally for a period of 2 months, and eventually it will happen".

@cornelinux: I don't think NFS and CIFS can be compared. I'd expect their behaviour to be different.

@Schrute: I assume whatever defaults are on Linux (iptables?), and Windows are running. You think the firewalls are timing out connections? I'd never heard of such a thing.

comment mod_cache not working
For the time being, I am using EnableCache / with DisableCache on selected subpaths to blacklist them. The current issue now is that the pages I'm interested in use sessions, so I need to decide what to do about that.

Ignoring PHPSESSID didn't help, but I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my problem.
