comment Is Dell's server software bundle necessary? (Poweredge 2950 in my case)
After putting in about as much time as I can stand, I'm about ready to swear off altogether any software written by Dell. The installation process for OpenManage is a total mess, and the documentation is more full of holes than the maginot line. Is there any way to accomplish the same simple raid monitoring with System Center stuff? I'd really rather learn that product if there's any comparable feature...I'm not terribly impressed with the value prospect of learning anything Dell at the moment.

Hah. Whoops! Forgot the router dhcp disable step. And to think I was looking forward to that step for most of the time I spent writing this!

comment Is mismatched firmware on drives in a raid-6 a bad thing?
Well, that's reassuring. Any idea how I would go about correcting it if I wanted to get help from Dell? Like maybe swapping the odd drive into the 0 slot so it's first in the array or something?

sounds like openmanage is the way to go. Now to attempt installing it from the report site, heh. Thanks!

It's funny that you mention that--it was actually raid monitoring that got me thinking about it in the first place. Incidentally, do you know which application it is that does said raid monitoring? Again this isn't terribly apparent when looking through dell's support, even when filtered by 2950 and Server 2008 R2.

This is good to know! I can certainly agree that there's little documentation, official or social, to explain why this doesn't work. I'm a little disappointed that a product with so few features can't at least manage to get it right. I'm a very small organization, so I don't know exactly how deep my VM usage will go, but for now it seems I can get SCVMM through MSDN so I'll certainly give it a shot. Thanks for the tip! As for your solution without SCVMM, can I assume that you were copying the vhds before attaching them? Why are snapshots bad? Is snapshot information stored in the vhd?
